- As a prelude, I'd like to say that I am an internet service
- provider and haven't use amiga's heavily (except for amitcp/napsaterm)
- for a long long time. But I've become quite familiar with how much
- effort it takes to install a complete set of networking tools for
- many platforms. For Un*xes it has become pretty easy (check out
- FreeBSD or Linux). For the ibm clone under OS/2 it is a little
- (but not too much) tougher, for the ibm clone under Win 3.x it is
- pretty easy depending upon how you like to do it, ~$30 will give
- you a licensed version of all you need. For Win 95 it is a little
- tougher but it works and can run very nicely and even has some
- native OS support (like OS/2). For the Mac, there is now some
- fairly native support and it seems to work pretty well. But the
- amiga eats my support time like nobodies business.
-
- The basic configuration is something that allows a user to just
- click, possibly enter any or all of a user name, password and phone
- number once (or choose from sets of them). Something that allows the
- user to receive and send mail (which itself can be replied to).
- Something that allows the user to read news, and post (the posts
- need to be repliable as well). And finally a web browser. That's
- it and most people are happy after that.
-
- It is more difficult for my average customer to set up his software
- on an Amiga than any other platform that we've taken support calls for.
- That said, here is a wish list...
-
- I'd love to see a standard set of libraries for:
- * processing addresses
- * SMTP/ESMTP mail sending
- * POP2/POP3 mail client functions
- * IMAP mail client functions - this is a biggy
- people with multiple access points really want this...
- Compliance to the remote mail configuration standards
- would be nice too.
- * NNTP client calls as well
- * A configuration application that will configure everything
- that uses these libraries with lots of explanation
- about what to do.
-
- The developer of the library could ask for a shareware fee, and
- any client written to use it would be able to charge their own fee.
- Maybe it could be purchasable as part of the tcp/ip stacks available.
- Anyway, if the library existed, writing the clients to use it should
- be easier, and we'd have more assurance that the software would
- adhere to standards and such. As long as the library standard is
- public. There could (as for winsock on windows) be multiple versions
- of the same library, but it would add a layer of compatability for
- the "basic" network clients.
-
- Any and all descriptions of how this already exists are welcome
- (it'll make my job a lot easier). Anyone with suggestions as to
- the best way to make Mosaic or IBrowser display at least 256 colors
- on my A2000 with an A2630+2632 with 18M of ram (16M is 32 bit)
- without spending too much money is also welcome to send me mail.
- Oh yeah, and suggestions as to the whereabouts of an ethernet card
- that doesn't cost $200 would be nice ;-)
